The SEAI solar grant for businesses

The SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen scheme pays towards solar PV for businesses, farms and public bodies, up to €162,600 for a 1 MWp system. The grant is only half the question. The other half is sizing the system to the power you actually use.

How much the grant is

From the SEAI Non-Domestic Microgen Scheme Application Guide:

  • Up to 2 kWp: €900 per kWp
  • 2.1 to 4 kWp: €300 per kWp, with 4 to 6 kWp capped at €2,400
  • 7 to 20 kWp: €300 per kWp
  • 21 to 200 kWp: €200 per kWp
  • 201 to 1,000 kWp: €150 per kWp
  • Above 1,000 kWp: no extra support, the maximum is €162,600

Worked examples

  • 20 kWp: €6,600
  • 50 kWp: €12,600
  • 100 kWp: €22,600
  • 200 kWp: €42,600
  • 500 kWp: €87,600

Who qualifies

  • Businesses, farms, public bodies and non-profits
  • Premises built and occupied on or before 31 December 2020
  • The system must be for self-consumption on a site that uses the power, not export only
  • SEAI grant approval must be in place before you buy anything or start work
  • The installer must be on the SEAI's registered lists, with a Safe Electric registered electrician
  • One grant per electricity meter (MPRN). The offer is valid for eight months

Size it from your real demand

Solar pays back fastest when the site uses most of what it generates. A hotel or food business with steady daytime refrigeration and kitchen load is a good fit. Measuring your daytime baseline before you size the system avoids paying for panels whose output you export for little return.

Common questions

How much is the SEAI solar grant for a business?

It depends on system size: €200 per kWp from 21 to 200 kWp, €150 per kWp from 201 to 1,000 kWp, with higher rates for small systems. A 100 kWp system receives €22,600, and the maximum is €162,600.

Can I install the panels and claim the grant afterwards?

No. SEAI grant approval must be in place before any materials are bought or work starts.

Is commercial solar worth it in Ireland?

It usually is for businesses with steady daytime demand, especially with the grant. The payback depends on how much of the output you use on site, which is why measuring your daytime load first matters.

Want this applied to your building?

Start with an energy audit. If you spend over ten thousand euro a year on energy, the SEAI grant covers most of the cost.
